Orderly, arranged, classical landscape. Clearly defined perspective through use of foreground, background, and middle ground. St. John is writing Revelation surrounded by ruins of ancient Rome. More energy than a Renaissance piece because of strong diagonal lines. Painting is very idealized and meticulously laid out. Moralizing overtone. Subject of painting is balance and order of nature rather than St. John. Poussin was a highly influential French artist. |
