So called because they claimed “to reveal” (Greek: apokalyptein) in highly symbolic and visionary language the true course and end of human history with the coming of God's kingdom on earth. Apocalyptists encouraged the Jewish people to endure persecution, however, repeated disappointment eventually stopped the publication of apocalyptic literature.
