Definition
Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group.  It was first coined in 1943 by Raphael Lemkin.  140 countries have signed onto the Genocide Convention since 1951, meaning that if that country defines a homicide as genocide, they must assist the country.

Stanford Prison Experiment
Definition
Performed by Philip Zimbardo, this experiment was meant to test the psychological effects that a prison setting had on innocent people.  A number of students (mostly middle class Caucasian) were chosen to participate.  Within six days, the experiment was ceased due to the effects it had on the “prisoners” and “guards.”

Definition
Ethnic identity is the identification of someone with a particular ethnic group.  While it does include a shared heritage, a common belief system, and a set of similar physical characteristics, it includes much more that many people do not consider.  It includes ethnic awareness, self-identification, attitudes, and behaviors.

Raphael Lemkin
Definition
Raphael Lemkin is the man who coined genocide in 1944.  Lemkin was born in 1990 in Poland and died in 1959.  He drafted the Genocide Convention, which was adopted by the U.N. General Assembly and signed by 140 different countries.

Part of Yugoslavia, reunited by Josip Tito after WWII.  Along with Slovenia, they declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, leading to a civil war.  Their government seemed to be reviving fascism, so Milosevic attacked Vukovar for 86 days (mass killings).

Definition
Took over leadership of Yugoslavia after Tito's death in 1980.  Serb Nationalist.  Had dream of "Serbian state" which led to European Genocide of 1990s.

Definition
A region in Sudan that is the current location of genocide.  Since 2003, the Sudanese government as well as the Janjaweed have killed over 400,000 people and running 2,000,000 out of their homes.  While the United States Congress has already declared this as a genocide, the United Nations refuses to follow suit.

Milgram Experiment
Definition
An experiment performed by Stanley Milgram, in which one subject was tested at a time.  The subject was the “teacher,” while an the “student” was played by an actor, unbeknownst to the “teacher.”  The “teacher” would ask the “student” a series of questions; as the “student” answered them incorrectly, the “teacher” would administer a fake shock to the “student” (although the “teacher” thought he or she was actually shocking him).

Definition
Lent is the forty day long Liturgical season of fasting and praying before Easter.  It symbolizes the forty days that Jesus spent in the desert where he was tempted by Satan.  Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday.  Typically, Christians observe Lent by giving up a luxury in their life (ie: meat, $200 haircuts, etc.).

Definition
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent in the Western Christian Church, marked by services of penitence.  A special service occurs on this day in churches throughout the world in which the sign of the cross made of palm ashes is put upon the forehead of the churchgoer.  Ash Wednesday is observed forty-six (forty, excluding Sundays) days before Easter of each year.

Definition
Ethnic cleansing is a euphemism for genocide.  It is the mass expulsion or killing of members of an unwanted ethnic or religious group in a society.  The term was used widely during the 1990’s regarding the war in former Yugoslavia.

Definition
The “silent majority” is the group of people who observe abuses, are upset by them, but do nothing to stop them.  According to the author of The Banality of Heroism, these people allow bad things to happen.  The good guards in the Stanford Prison Experiment were part of the silent majority.

Definition
Heroic elect is a myth that supports two human tendencies: to see heroes as superhuman and to believe that someone else will take responsibility to do what is right.  This second effect is known as the “bystander effect.”  Heroic elect focuses on the observer rather than the hero.
