What should you tell a student who doesn't understand why they have to complete General Education (GE)?
Definition
- UCLA has a liberal arts curriculum, which, unlike professional schools, is designed to produce well-rounded students with wide range of knowledge outside of just their area of study. Or something to that effect :)

There have been four different formats of GE over the years at UCLA, what format are we currently using and when might you need to use an older format when counseling a student?
Definition
- We are currently using GE Format IV, otherwise known as "Foundational GE"

- If you are counseling a student who is reentering UCLA and had originally been admitted years before you may need to use an older GE Format. STUDENTS MUST ADHERE TO THE FORMAT FOR THE CALENDER YEAR THAT THEY WERE FIRST ADMITTED.

- Yes, as long the course is on the approved GE list in the General Catalog and the student receives the highest minimum grade of the two requirements.

What are GE Clusters?
Definition
- Year long, collaboratively taught themed courses designed to strengthen the intellectual skills of freshmen as well as introduce them to faculty and give them experience in seminar and interdisciplinary settings.

How can a student receive Honors credit from a GE Cluster?
Definition
- By receiving a grade of B or higher.

- *Note* this is for each individual quarter, so if a students gets an A Fall quarter and a C Winter quarter they will still get Honors credit for Fall quarter.

What is the grading basis for GE Clusters? What grade must a student receive to continue on in the next course of a cluster?
Definition
- GE Cluster courses must be taken on a mandatory graded basis

- Students must receive a minimum grade of D- to continue in a Cluster sequence.

How can a student receive Writing II credit from their GE Cluster?
Definition
- Students must receive a minimum grade of C in the third quarter Spring seminar portion of the Cluster to earn Writing II credit.

- Grades of D- or higher earn GE credit, but will not go towards Writing II (or Honors credit)

- As of this year students can simultaneously satisfy Writing I and take the seminar course of their Cluster to receive Writing II credit, though this is not advised. Encourage your students to satisfy Writing I ASAP.

What might you recommend a student do if they cannot get into a GE Cluster that they wanted?
Definition
- If the student is VERY serious about the course suggest that they contact the faculty teaching the course directly. Chances are they may be able to get in.
- Since their spot is not guaranteed make sure they have a backup course for their schedule.
