Term
German Expressionism
Definition
-developed poetic expressiveness in film -focus on revealing the state of mind of the characters and projecting this state of mind outward onto the mis-en-scene -lasted less than a decade but was influential beyond (film noire was based from this) -6 main characteristics: (1) show reality under the surface. there is more to the world than what we see at first glance (2) reality is tortured and diseased (3) extreme emotions: madness, hysteria, violence, sickness. lots of crazy people (4) the social problems are seen from individual psychology, not from social or economic forces (5) fear and distrust of authority (6) anti-realist: distorted and exaggerated -heavily influenced by paintings such as Munch's "The Scream" and Grosz's "A winter's Tale"
Term
Nosferatu
Definition
-A german expressionist film directed by F.W. Murnau -shadows and shots are present in the shot with shadows of hands on the wall
Term
Film: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Definition

Directed by Robert Wiene, 1920, Germany -topsy turvy world, sets created with painting instead of lights to create shadow, etc. -xenaphobia: carnival from Italy coming into small German town, corrupting town -virtuous female character, typical of expressionist films - narrative is downplayed and mood is emphasized -very claustrophobic set all in studio with lots of paintings. no location shooting studio produced film - the film made so much money that it kept the entire industry afloat -critizes German governement (Nazi party) Caligari compared to Hitler. -story about the fantastic, horror with hidden secrets -over the top acting style. not natural style. For example in a scene that takes place in a forest, one of the characters acts like a tree -editing style also bazaar: lots of iris fade-ins, almost a way of looking into someone's mind
