Term
Dura Mater
Definition
Tough outermost covering. Extensions of this covering surround the spinal nerves as they emerge from the cord; the nerves, however, have no subarachnoid space. This layer is continuous with the epineurium.
Term
Arachnoid Mater
Definition
Just inside dura. Sends thin fibers to the spinal cord to keep it in place.
Term
Subarachnoid Space
Definition
Canal filled with cerebrospinal fluid, located between arachnoid mater and pia mater. Fills space around spinal cord; protection.
Term
Pia Mater
Definition
Thin layer (one cell thick, usually) that covers over outer surface of cord
Term
Denticulate Ligament
Definition
Lateral extensions of the Pia Mater, the denticulate ligament, attach spinal cord to dura mater, thus holding the spinal cord in the center of the dural sac as a hammock. This is to protect it from shock when the body is jostled around.
Term
Conus Medullaris
Definition
The spinal cord terminates in the L1 vertebral level as a cone-shaped region called the ‘conus medullaris.'
Term
Filum Terminale
Definition
The pia mater continues to the end of the sacral part of the spinal canal as a structure known as the filum terminale.
Term
Cauda Equina
Definition
The cauda equina, which are the dorsal and ventral roots of lower lumbar and sacral nerves distal to the conus medullaris, surround the filum terminale; while they are hard to tell apart, the cauda equina is nonetheless distinctly separate from the filum terminale.
