Term
Definition
A substance that causes sever skin/ tissue damage on contact |
Term
Definition
A substance that has been demonstrated to cause cancer. |
Term
Definition
Two liquids that cannot be separated by distillation due to the vapor having the same composition as the liquid at some composition. The distillate can only be enriched with the more volatile component up to this composition. |
Term
two effects on melting point when 2 organic compounds mixed together. |
Definition
1- lowered range 2- Broadened range |
Term
characteristics of a good recrystallization solvent |
Definition
-The compound to be recrystallized must dissolve in the solvent at or near its boiling point. -The compound to be recrystallized must have a very low solubility in the solvent at or below room temperature. |
Term
purpose of a hot filtration? When is it necessary to perform one? |
Definition
A hot filtration is done during a recrystallization when all of the compound to be purified has been dissolved in the hot solvent. It is necessary when there are insoluble impurities. |

Term
MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether) |
Definition
-MTBE was used as a gasoline additive. -MTBE leached from underground storage tanks. -MTBE ended up in groundwater and subsequently tap water. -MTBE has an unpleasant odor. This odor kept people from being able to use their tap water once their water supply was contaminated. -MTBE has a much higher solubility in water than the hydrocarbon components of gasoline. The higher water solubility allowed the MTBE to be carried away into the environment after leaching from storage tanks, whereas the hydrocarbon components could not be transported as readily due to much lower water solubility. |

Term
Why N2, O2 , Ar are not green gas while CO2 is |
Definition
Any atmospheric gas that absorbs IR radiation is considered to be a greenhouse gas: N2, O2, and Ar do not absorb IR radiation, CO2 does absorb IR radiation. |
Term
What is meant by the term “meso”? |
Definition
A meso compound is an achiral compound with stereogenic centers. |
Term
Definition
The molecular ion (by definition) contains only the most abundant isotope of each element. The mass of the molecular ion is the sum of the exact masses for that specific isotope for each element present in the formula. |
Term
Definition
The molecular weight sums the weighted average of masses for the distribution of naturally occurring isotopes of each element. |
Term
why molecular mechanics would be a poor choice to computationally investigate the structure of the tropylium ion. |
Definition
Molecular mechanics does not incorporate electrons or molecular orbitals. The only way to get any meaningful information about this ion is to incorporate these into the calculation. |
Term
Definition
A substance that causes birth defects in utero. |
Term
Definition
A substance that increases the rate of a reaction without being consumed in the overall reaction. |
Term
Definition
A measure of the mass of atoms in the starting materials that end up in the product. |
Term
Definition
A substance that allows the transport of an ion or molecule from one phase to another. In the adipic acid lab we used a phase-transfer catalyst to transport HWO4- from the aqueous phase to the organic phase. |
